Ratings   (explanation of our rating system)

Global rating :
A famous bath at the entrance of Shiobara, located very next to the Hokigawa river. Unfortunately, the bath is also located close to the opposite shore, a ryokan and a bridge, all offering full view on the people soaking there - even during the night! Therefore, this bath is more a curiosity, and mostly only locals go there.

Size :
Rather small size, but it is on the other hand unlikely to be crowded.

View :
The view is quite nice - apart from the river, you of course can enjoy looking at people walking around.

Modesty :
No changing room is available. But considering that the bath is in full view of the people walking on the opposite shore, it should not be a problem... Very unlikely to find women bathing there.

Area :
Discovered 800 years ago, Shiobara is a popular onsen resort located on the Hokigawa River. Most of the onsen, which are obtained from eleven hot springs, are located close to this river, surrounded by woods. This area is especially famous during the koyo season, in late autumn, when thousands of Japanese gather to observe the beautiful colors of the trees. Although hiking trails are available, and several ski fields in winter, due to its vicinity to Tokyo, the whole place is definitively overdeveloped...
