Ratings   (explanation of our rating system)

Global rating :
Located in the woods, at about 100 meters of the Hoki river, Fudo no yado offers a great, atmospheric bathing. Unfortunately, it is also a famous bath, which tends to be often crowded.

Size :
There is only one bath, and depending on the number of people willing to bath in it, it can look really small...

View :
Unlike most of onsen in Shiobara, which offers view on the rivers, this bath is completely surrounded by tall tree. Especially at night, under the stars, it can be a very impressive place to bath - almost frightening in some way.

Modesty :
No changing room is available. But during the night, women can often be seen in this rotenburo.

Area :
Discovered 800 years ago, Shiobara is a popular onsen resort located on the Hokigawa River. Most of the onsen, which are obtained from eleven hot springs, are located close to this river, surrounded by woods. This area is especially famous during the koyo season, in late autumn, when thousands of Japanese gather to observe the beautiful colors of the trees. Although hiking trails are available, and several ski fields in winter, due to its vicinity to Tokyo, the whole place is definitively overdeveloped...

Comment

We stopped in this place, located at the entrance of the village, after one full day of bathing in Shiobara onsen. In September, the whole area tends to be really crowded, since many Japanese go there to enjoy the colors of autumn. We were hoping to get rid of the crow by soaking there after the sunset. In fact, the bath was still quite crowded, but at least it made the undressing easier. We were lucky to have one cell phone with a lamp, as there is no lightening at all. Bring therefore some light if you plan to go there during the night, as the pathway is difficult to follow.
