| | Global rating : | | A very large hotel, featuring two bathing areas: one on the seventh floor, with an inside bath opening on the very nice view of the village, and one on the first underground where an inside bath and two rotenburo are found - one of them being a small wooden bath (hinoki).
| Size : | | The rotenburo on the ground floor are rather small, while the inside baths are larger.
| View : | | The rotenburo do not have any interesting view, as they are surrounded by tall walls. The inside bath on the 7th floor, on the other hand, offers an unusual view on the town.
| Area : | | Shima Onsen is situated along the Shima river, at the end of a mountainous valley. For more than 1000 years, its waters have been considered effective for the treatment of many diseases, making it one of the top onsen town in Japan. But unlike many of those towns, Shima onsen is still a quiet place, perhaps due to its remoteness. The Okushima lake, formed by a dam, is also worth a visit.

Surprisingly, my girlfriend and I were not really agreeing on the quality of the outside bath... I was not really impressed, while she found it quite gorgeous. We got the explanation later, when checking the pictures at home: while the men's outside bath was an uninspiring one with just a couple of big stones around it, the women's one was completely made up of stones, and much more pleasant... One example where the women get a better bath!
