| | Global rating : | | Free outside baths, located opposite the Chuseikan ryokan. Although not sheltered and offering no amenity, those baths are however better than the ryokan's one, mostly because they look much less artificial.
| Size : | | Two small baths located next to a river, each of them can probably accommodate a maximum of three persons.
| View : | | View is limited to the mountain river flowing the to the baths... and to the windows of the opposite ryokan!
| Modesty : | | The two small baths are next to the river, opposite to the ryokan. Since not only rooms of the ryokan have a direct view on it, but also the place to undress is directly open toward the small bridge used to cross the river, you might only enjoy bathing there if nobody's around!
| Area : | | Shima Onsen is situated along the Shima river, at the end of a mountainous valley. For more than 1000 years, its waters have been considered effective for the treatment of many diseases, making it one of the top onsen town in Japan. But unlike many of those towns, Shima onsen is still a quiet place, perhaps due to its remoteness. The Okushima lake, formed by a dam, is also worth a visit.

If you have the choice between this free bath and the rotenburo in the Chuseikan ryokan, the free one is definitively a better option. When we arrived there, no one was around, so we could enjoy a bath just for ourselves.
