| | Global rating : | | From the very small onsen town Numajiri Onsen you can hike to the mountains, to the area where the hot water gushes out of the ground (the discharge point). There, you can bath in a mountain stream warmed by the onsen water. This is one of the most prominent onsen in Japan, with more than 10'000 liters discharged every minute from the ground! Check the guide on Secret Japan - link below - for detailed information on the hiking.
| Size : | | There is no real bath, just a hot river! You can soak anyplace you want, although sometimes you can not follow the river upstream as the area is closed because of the amount of dangerous gas...
| View : | | The view is really nice, especially in the late afternoon. You are surrounded my mountains, and apart of one house and a destroyed building as well as some pipes bringing the hot water to the villages, there is just nothing around.
| Modesty : | | There is absolutely no facility, no changing room. Just undress next to the river and jump in it! Technically, you could wear a swimming costume, but due to the acidity of the river, this is not recommended...
| Area : | | The Bandai-Azuma is a very attractive area, with small ski resorts in winter, excellent hiking in beautiful mountains and great onsen. It is far enough from all major cities to be relatively quiet. While public transportations are available, you might prefer to rent a car to visit more spots. Goshiki lakes are also well worth the visit.
