Ratings   (explanation of our rating system)

Global rating :
Very quiet place, easily reached by car from Shiobara Onsen. While the ryokan is not very appealing from inside - it is mostly a large concrete building - the baths located on the hill are extremely pleasant.

Size :
The two baths have a similar size, and are one above the other, just separated by some trees. Made of stones with a flat bottom, each of them can accommodate 6-8 persons at a time. The bottom bath was much hotter, and we even couldn't enter in it (temperature of 46 degrees Celsius)!

View :
Completely surrounded by trees, with a lot of momiji around. The view is quite limited - with also prevents the building from being too apparent - but the whole area must be absolutely gorgeous then the leafs turn red.

Modesty :
While the inside baths are segregated, both rotenburo and konyoku. There is no real changing area, as baskets for clothes are just available next to the water. Next to the bottom bath, a nori (curtain) could be used a shelter, providing only very limited privacy. On the other hand, if the bath is empty, you will enjoy it completely as it can not be seen from the ryokan.

Area :
Discovered 800 years ago, Shiobara is a popular onsen resort located on the Hokigawa River. Most of the onsen, which are obtained from eleven hot springs, are located close to this river, surrounded by woods. This area is especially famous during the koyo season, in late autumn, when thousands of Japanese gather to observe the beautiful colors of the trees. Although hiking trails are available, and several ski fields in winter, due to its vicinity to Tokyo, the whole place is definitively overdeveloped...
