| | Global rating : | | Inaugurated in 2003, this small onsen is located close to the left bank of the river. Apart of a nice forest walk that runs through Shiobara Onsen, there is nothing around the bath, but visitors can easily reach it crossing the river by a small suspended bridge. A changing area is available, with a couple of baskets for the clothes, but no privacy at all.
| Size : | | There are two small baths separated by a small wall, and with an overall elliptic shape; since the spring water runs from the left to the right one, there is a nice temperature gradient. Both baths have the same size, and are relatively small, accommodating at most 8-10 soakers - and it would then be really crowded!
| View : | | As its name suggests, there are many momiji (a kind of maple tree) around the onsen, which turn crimson in late Autumn. Shiobara onsen is very famous for its colors at this season, and the town - as well as all onsen - will be very busy then. While located close to the river, there is a wooden partition in front of the bath which blocks the view; this is unfortunate, but obviously was required as a large western restaurant was built on the other shore, just opposite the onsen...
| Modesty : | | Like most public rotenburo in Shiobara Onsen, there is little privacy here. A nice - and therefore busy - walking path is located just behind the onsen, which means that people walking there have a direct view on the onsen; there is a changing area, but it is just in front of the bath, without door nor curtain, making it unlikely to see a woman in those waters...
| Area : | | Discovered 800 years ago, Shiobara is a popular onsen resort located on the Hokigawa River. Most of the onsen, which are obtained from eleven hot springs, are located close to this river, surrounded by woods. This area is especially famous during the koyo season, in late autumn, when thousands of Japanese gather to observe the beautiful colors of the trees. Although hiking trails are available, and several ski fields in winter, due to its vicinity to Tokyo, the whole place is definitively overdeveloped...
