Usually the luggage takes 3 days to Tokyo. It is pretty fast. Most of visitors send their stuff back like this, so it is really easy.

For the accomodation, not having a reservation is certainly a risk. I can't tell you if you will have to sleep on a beach at the end or not... Wink

hm... I'll see what I can do, I'll try to make reservations once I know if I can cross the island or not... i.e. tomorrow morning... I'm taking the ferry to Ishigaki tonight and I'll get there tomorrow morning...then I'll check with the Tourism info Centre... Might end up sleeping under a tree or something in Ohara... hehe... is it a crime around here?
Thanks again,

~Sorin

So, Bob in Japan, any success in crossing the Island alone?

I am wondering if yes, and with success, or if not, or if yes and without success so that I will find your body when I try the hike in September 2008?

Thanks
Matthias

If I want to combine canoeing Urauchi river and cross-island hiking, how long would it take?

Before the hike, should I canoe all the way or start with a motor boat, then continue on a canoe? I assume that canoeing can take me roughly to where the hike should start, but if I'm wrong then I guess canoe + hike is not a combination.

Thank you very much!

It is possible to hike to the small pier where all boats are arriving. From there, you would have to hike to the waterfalls, and there only is the start of the trek cross the island.

Then, what would you do with the canoe/kayak? Have the rental company pick it up? I doubt they provide such service. Furthermore, to be able to do the hike, you have to take the first boat in the morning - reaching the beginning of the trek by yourself would take far too much time...
