As a foreigner, you can get really nice discount in specific areas of Japan! Here is a list of those areas, as well as information on how to get the discount cards. Some are to be obtained in specific offices, while others can be directly printed from your PC. Most of them might require foreigners to show their passports when getting a discount, so keep that document with you when traveling.
Check also carefully who is eligible for the discount. For some areas, only foreigners staying less than 1 year in Japan can get the discounts; for others, as long as you are not Japanese, you are ok. Which means that living in Japan is not a limitation!
Spend some time checking which facilities are offering discounts in the areas you plan to visit. This could allow you to spare some serious money...
