Recommendation for onsen

I will be travelling in Japan for a few days and would love to experience traditional onsen.

I am looking for a friendly mixed onsen near Tokyo and Kyoto, where bathing suits are optional (or not allowed).  As I am a woman, I'm looking for a female friendly onsen where there will not only be men around.
