I am planning a trip to Yakushima in October. I wonder if anyone here has been there, and could make suggestion for :
- interesting 1-day hikes
- lodging recommendation
I plan to rent a car (we will be 4 persons traveling together), so we probably will be quite flexible on the location to stay at.
Any experience would probably help me a lot...
Thanks,

Hi sanji,
I just wondered if you finally went to Yakushima as you planned in this thread.
How is Yakushima in October? Isn't the trip too long from Tokyo? What lenght of stay would you recommend for such a destination... ? |

Hi tinou,
Indeed, I came back from Yakushima - after a couple of extra days in the southern part of Kyushu - just one week ago!
The island is really great, especially if you enjoy outdoor activities. There is only one problem: the weather... It rained almost every day (at least a little), which is rather inconvenient for hiking - the most attractive activity on Yakushima.
Apart of that, the temperature is significantly warmer than in Tokyo, and even in October, the sea is really warm. Access from Tokyo is not difficult, but quite expensive: plane to Kagoshima, and from there plane to Yakushima (or transfer to the town and ferry/jetfoil, which costs virtually the same at the end of the day).
It is a destination I strongly recommend to visitors with some time: I would say that 3 nights on the island are a must, to have at least 2 full days to enjoy the natural spots...
I will be writing a guide on the island... ASAP (which might not be immediately...)
